What is it?
The International Summer School on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is a forum for you if you are an early career researcher (PhD or post-doc) and want to deepen your understanding of CSCW as a research field and community. The school is organized as a pre-study period followed by an intensive one-week onsite event where you will engage with senior scholars and other course participants. Its participants rate the school as an enriching and demanding experience that creates lasting personal bounds. The CSCW summer school is organised by the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET).
Learning objectives
This summer school aims to equip its participants with a “CSCW lens” to understand the design of sociotechnical systems. By attending this summer school, you will:
- Get a deep understanding of CSCW, its key concepts, and its research approach.
- Get a deep understanding of the methods/techniques used in the research and the design of collaborative technologies in support of work practices.
- Learn to apply the CSCW lens to contemporary technology and design topics such as data science, machine learning, healthcare, sustainability, participatory design, post-colonial computing, intersectionality, etc.
- Learn how to write and publish papers in CSCW-related journals and conferences.
The CSCW summer school will provide you with unique knowledge and skills to cut through the buzz and better understand the complexities inherent in today’s sociotechnical practices. Combining these skills should be the patrimony of any researcher who wants to grasp the complex and subtle issues in the CSCW research area.
Program
The summer school consists of two major parts, both mandatory. In the pre-study part, you will read and analyse an assigned body of literature and develop ideas for a research project. You will also present your research project (PhD, Postdoc) within a CSCW framing. In the second part you will participate in an in-person seminar in Vienna where you will attend lectures, present your results, and work further on your project. The course is finished after you have participated in the seminar in Vienna.
